Feeling through another's eyes: Perceived gaze direction impacts ERP and behavioural measures of positive and negative affective empathy

چکیده
Looking at the eyes informs us about thoughts and emotions of those around us, impacts our own emotional state. However, it is unknown how perceiving direct averted gaze ability to share gazer's positive negative emotions, abilities referred as affective empathy. We presented 44 participants with contextual sentences describing positive, neutral events happening other people (e.g. “Her newborn was saved/killed/fed yesterday afternoon.”). These were designed elicit negative, or little no empathy, followed by images individuals described. Participants rated their empathy for individual valence on each trial. Event-related potentials time-locked face-onset associated processing recorded investigate whether they modulated direction. Relative gaze, increased in conditions ratings. A similar pattern found neural level, using robust mass-univariate statistics. The N100, thought reflect an automatic activation emotion areas, conditions, opposite effect directions conditions.. P200, ERP component sensitive stimuli, direction only condition. Positive trials processed similarly early N200 stage, but later diverged, modulating EPN, P300 LPP components. results suggest that are distinct time-courses, perceived uniquely modulates highlighting importance studying face stimuli.

متن کاملObjects capture perceived gaze direction.
The interpretation of another person's eye gaze is a key element of social cognition. Previous research has established that this ability develops early in life and is influenced by the person's head orientation, as well as local features of the person's eyes. Here we show that the presence of objects in the attended space also has an impact on gaze interpretation. Eleven normal adults identifi...
متن کاملLooking ahead: the perceived direction of gaze shifts before the eyes move.
How do we know where we are looking? Our direction of gaze is commonly thought to be assigned to the location in the world that falls on our fovea, but this may not always hold, especially, as we report here, just before an eye movement. Observers shifted their gaze to a clock with a fast-moving hand and reported the time perceived to be on the clock when their eyes first landed. The reported t...
متن کاملEyes Segmentation Applied to Gaze Direction and Vigilance Estimation
An efficient algorithm to iris segmentation and its application to automatic and non-intrusive gaze tracking and vigilance estimation is presented and discussed. A luminance gradient technique is used to fit the irises from face images. A robust preprocessing which mimics the human retina is used in such a way that a robust system to luminance variations is obtained and contrast enhancement is ...
